Family History Through the Alphabet Challenge ~ J

J is for Joseph Leonard Mangiafico.

I thought I would take this opportunity to share some of Joe's military papers.
Joseph served a total of 4 years 9 months and 14 days in the United States Navy.  He reenlisted  August 9, 1961.  May 16, 1962 He earned the rank of E-4 which means he was a Petty Officer.  His last duty assignment was aboard the USS BORIE (DD-704).  He had a total of 10 months sea service.  Joseph was honorably discharged August 13, 1962.

The following document is his ENLISTED PERFORMANCE RECORD.

If you'll notice, there are three entries indicating that Joe was a bad boy.  The first entry is on 22 Jun 58 stating NON-JUDICIAL PUNISHMENT while serving on the USS BORIE (DD-704). It refers you to Pg. 13-4 ==>

I'm not sure what the crossed out stuff means.  Maybe they let him slide on a few things.  Interestingly the day of this violation was 1 month and 8 days after his wedding.

The second instance happened 8 Feb 61 and refers to page 13 (8) ==>

The third violation occurred 17 Jul 62 referring to pg 13-4 ==>

Now I am a little confused as to how he was AOL while in the hospital.  Maybe he was running around the hospital and not in his room where he was supposed to be?  On Jul 14, 1962 his status was changed to TEMDU UNDER TREATMENT.  If not strictly a patient, what kind of service would he be doing at the hospital?  Well that's a riddle for another day.

Family History Through the Alphabet ~ I

I is for Italian Immigrants. I have been able to piece most of Joe's Immigrant ancestors and cousins together with the help of  passenger lists from Ancestry.com.  All except for cousin Rosario Bologna.  I still have no idea where he fits in this family puzzle.

I have a feeling I am not going to be able to find any more puzzle pieces without forking out some bucks.

Recently I have been looking into Italian Immigrants in general and what they endured.  Thanks to the blog post Italian Americans of Boston, by Jenny Tonks I was able to get a glimpse of their way of life:

I can't wait until this project is done. It's going to be awesome. Joe's parents and cousins all lived in Boston's North End when they came over. It seemed that they all lived at either 4 or 5 North Square.

Here is another look at the life of Italian Immigrants:

This was my first installment for this blog in the Family History Through the Alphabet Challenge.  What is your take on the letter I?

Mystery Monday - Who Was Cousin Rosario Bologna?

Last year I posted about the naturalization papers for Joe's father Paolo Michele Mangiafico.  When he came to America he stated that the relative he was going to join was Rosario Bologna who resided at 4 N. Square St. Boston, Mass.

Source Citation: Year: 1920; ; Microfilm Serial: T715; Microfilm Roll: T715_2846; Line: 7;
 Page Number:
153.

I was hoping that cousin Rosario would lead me to information about Paolo's mother or father, but I'm having trouble even pinpointing the correct Rosario Bologna.

This is what I have found listing a Rosario Bologna:

Name:Rosario Bologna
Arrival Date:27 Apr 1914
Birth Year:abt 1885
Birth Location:Sicily
Birth Location Other:palazzolo acreide
Age:29
Gender:Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality:Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure:Palermo
Port of Arrival:New York, New York
Ship Name:Calabria

Source Citation: Year: 1914; ; Microfilm Serial: T715;
Microfilm Roll: T715_2304; Line: 12Page Number: 197

This Rosario traveled with his wife Emanuela Gallo and son Salvatore Bologna.  It seems that the Italian women always traveled under their maiden name.

The relative they left behind was Carmela Gozzo

This is a bit confusing, but I am assuming that "Gozzo" was her maiden name since the daughter Emanuela was listed with the last name "Gallo".

The relative they were going to join was cousin Sebastiano Gozzo. I am assuming he was Emanuela's cousin.

Then I discovered that this same Rosario came to the U.S. once before in 1912.  He left his wife in Italy at that time and went to join cousin Paolo Perrolla(?) in Connecticut.

And then I found this other passenger list for a Rosario Bologna:
Name:Rosario Bologna
Arrival Date:22 Jun 1914
Birth Year:abt 1881
Birth Location:Sicily
Birth Location Other:palazzolo
Age:33
Gender:Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality:Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure:Palermo, Italy
Port of Arrival:New York, New York
Ship Name:Calabria

Source Citation: Year: 1914; ; Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_2337; Line: 17;Page Number: 40

Would you like to take a guess who the relative was that this Rosario Bologna was going to join in Boston, Mass.  Well it's none other than cousin Rosario Bologna who resides at 5 North Square in Boston, Mass.

Are you confused yet? I sure am! Since the latter Rosario Bologna is joining cousin Rosario Bologna at 5 North Square he must be referring to the Rosario who married Emanuela.  But which one is Paolo Michele's cousin?!

All I know is that the cousin Rosario I am looking for was residing at 4 North Square in Boston, Mass. in September of 1920.  The only Rosario Bologna I could find in Boston in 1920 lived on Salem Street and was married to Brigida.

The latter Rosario and his wife Teresa were living in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1920.

This is all giving me a headache.  Sure would love to solve this mystery!

Wow! It's My Blogoversary!

Stopped into Joe's place here and discovered that it is his blogoversary!  I think that calls for a cannoli! I had no idea.  Does that mean I have too many blogs?

I'm afraid the Italian lines have been ignored as of late.  You know how it is.  Sometimes you just have to put some ancestors to bed for awhile and go wake another one up.

However, a while back I did talk to his cousin Joe Mangiafico.  I know.  How confusing is that to have a cousin with the same name?

Cousin Joe immigrated with his parents and siblings in December of 1955 on the ship Roma.

They were staying with Joe's mom and dad for a while.  During this time Joe was in a school for delinquents.  Cousin Joe and his family hadn't been in the U.S. very long when he was awaken in the middle of the night by some type of officers aiming guns at him.  It seems that Joe had escaped the school.  I think he quickly assured them he wasn't the Joe Mangiafico they were looking for.
